[quantumexpedition] on tour in Tokyo

How do you get an international audience excited about cutting-edge German research?

With [quantumexpedition], we have succeeded in blurring the boundaries between science, technology, and gaming—this time at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 (September 25–28). In Japan, one of the most creative and influential countries in the field of game development, we presented our virtual science adventure to a whole new audience. In the immersive VR experience [quantumexpedition], players enter an interactive research laboratory to experience molecules, cells, and quantum effects up close.

What began as a science communication project has now gained international attention on one of the world's largest gaming platforms – impressively demonstrating how research “made in Germany” can spark enthusiasm far beyond disciplinary and cultural boundaries.

During our stay in Japan, we also visited Maker Faire Tokyo – one of the leading platforms for creative technology, electronics, and prototyping. The exchange with developers, hardware enthusiasts, and local technology communities provided valuable input for the further development of the technical components of [quantumexpedition] and opened up new perspectives for future applications. With [quantumexpedition], we bring the fascination of modern research to where curiosity, creativity, and technology meet – into the hands of a global community. This is an important step toward further strengthening Germany's visibility as a research location.
